Osteoporosis-related fractures pose significant quality of life and economic burdens. However, prominent risk factors are frequently overlooked and osteoporosis continues to be under recognized by patients and primary care clinicians alike. A number of agents with varying mechanisms of action are available for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. Patient and clinician discussions of the merits and drawbacks of treatment paradigms are paramount since long-term management strategies are required and polypharmacy is common in this population. Compliance and persistence with pharmacotherapy are frequently low and many patients prematurely discontinue therapy with negative consequences on bone mineral density (BMD).
Practical Approaches to the Management of Osteoporosis will underscore the importance of osteoporosis screening, risk-benefit analysis, treatment selection, and long-term patient adherence. Evidence-based data on available and emerging pharmacotherapies will be presented to assist with treatment initiation, efficacy issues, and long-term safety assessment. Clinical challenges such as use and interpretation of BMD testing, patient adherence, and treatment failure will also be addressed. The didactic presentation will be complemented by a case presentation and review of clinical resource tools.
