A Clinical Conversation: Diagnosis & Treatment of Neuropathic Pain

Scroll to the bottom of page to listen to the podcast

Program Overview:

Neuropathic pain affects approximately 4 million people in the United States each year. Neuropathic pain is associated with many diseases that the primary care clinician encounters every day in his/her practice setting. Diagnosing peripheral neuropathy is often difficult because the symptoms are highly variable. A thorough neurological examination is usually required and involves taking an extensive patient history (including the patient’s symptoms, work environment, social habits, exposure to any toxins, history of alcoholism, risk of HIV or other infectious disease, and family history of neurological disease), performing tests that may identify the cause of the neuropathic disorder, and conducting tests to determine the extent and type of nerve damage.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of neuropathic pain to increase identification of patients with neuropathic pain
  • Evaluate available treatment options for neuropathic pain and their appropriateness for your patient population to improve outcomes in these patients
