Insomnia is a highly prevalent sleep disorder; it is sometimes observed as a primary disorder, but is often comorbid with other conditions. Whether as a primary or secondary condition, if left untreated, chronic insomnia can have a serious, detrimental impact on a person’s health, safety, and quality of life. Despite its prevalence and adverse effects, insomnia remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. Factors that contribute to the inadequate treatment of insomnia include the failure of patients to report the condition to clinicians, and clinician and patient misperceptions about the appropriate use and risks associated with hypnotic medications. This program will address effective strategies for diagnosing and treating patients with insomnia.

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify risk factors, determine appropriate screening tools, and accurately diagnose insomnia
- Evaluate current and emerging nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies for acute and chronic insomnia on the basis of efficacy and safety and apply this knowledge/skill with patients
