Migraine is a chronic, debilitating disorder that affects approximately 28 million Americans of whom ~18% are women and ~6% are men. Recent epidemiologic data have shown that although there has been a slow increase in the diagnosis and treatment rates of migraine, it continues to remain undertreated. The prevalence of migraine increases in women during their menstrual cycle, commonly referred to as menstrual migraine (MM). When compared to migraines that occur during other times of the month, MM may last longer and be more severe, disabling, frequent, and more difficult to treat. By understanding the pathophysiology of MM, the role of hormones in migraine, and utilizing diagnostic tools and questionnaires, clinicians can effectively diagnose and implement prompt and appropriate treatment. Additionally, by evaluating characteristics of the patient, and her migraine, and match treatment approaches accordingly, clinicians will improve treatment outcomes among their patients with MM and ultimately improve patient quality of life and decrease associated disability. This program will address the new advances in the understanding of MM, the role of hormones, and how to select an appropriate treatment based on individual patient characteristics.
