Program Overview:

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep complaints, affecting approximately 30% of the American population, and is chronic for millions. Considered either a primary or secondary disorder, it is associated with a wide range of adverse conditions including mood disturbance, cognitive difficulties, fatigue, injuries and accidents, and even endocrine and metabolic functions. It has been shown that the primary care population has a higher prevalence of insomnia than the general population, necessitating the need for effective diagnostic and treatment tools.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize the key points for the diagnosis of insomnia, including patients with increased risk factors, secondary causes, and the role of concomitant conditions
  • Implement a management strategy for insomnia that includes sleep hygiene principles, behavioral management, and pharmacological options
